Background
The Rural Social Scheme started in Louth in August 2005 and is co-ordinated and administered by Louth LEADER. Four participants joined the scheme at that time. There are now 10 participants working on the scheme in the county with strong interest being shown by farmers family members in Louth

Benefits of the RSS to Farmers
This Scheme allows low-income farmers and fishermen who are unable to earn an adequate living from their farm or fishing, to earn a supplementary income. A supplementary or top up income is provided to participants who work 19.5 hours per week, these hours are based on a farmer/fisherman-friendly schedule.

Benefits of the RSS to Communities
The objective of the RSS is that of the work undertaken is beneficial to the local community. The types of projects carried out in Louth are:

Village and countryside enhancement projects
Environmental maintenance work
Maintenance and caretaking of community and sporting facilities
Projects relating to not for profit cultural and heritage centres

Current Beneficiaries

Mullabouy Community Centre has two participants who maintain the community centre where numerous activities are held every week, making the centre a focal point for the whole community.

Thomas Keenan, who helps with the maintenance and room preparation in the Foy Centre, Carlingford, has proved to be a tremendous asset to this Community based facility.

The scheme also operates at Glenmore Running Club, where Francis O’Reilly spends his time maintaining the track and pitches.

Cultural and Heritage Centres - Mary Fagan is based at Holy Trinity Heritage Centre, Carlingford which is located in a beautifully restored medieval church, in which a number of meetings, classes and concerts take place. Mary spends her working week preparing the centre for these activities and general caretaking duties.
